Apart from the introduction, most of the footnotes and a couple of the artist contributions, the sample above is what was submitted as the book proposal.
Below is an interesting clipping from Billboard (18 February 1995, p. 13) in which Pierce argues, in the final paragraph, against what would have been the central thrust of my book: that at the time of the Pure Phase sessions, Spiritualized were determinedly forging an avant-garde path.

Fast forward to a recent interview in The Quietus, about the Pure Phase re-release, in which Jason talks about his interest in minimalism, at the time of the recordings, and where he reveals: “I’d probably say it’s my favourite of the records I’ve made.”
Maybe I chose the right record for my book proposal after all.
