Julia-Sophie and Maria Uzor release new music

It’s a great week for music with new releases from fiercely independent artists, Julia-Sophie and Maria Uzor. They are mates and have previously worked together. They play live at The Victoria in Dalston this Wednesday.

Julia-Sophie, the acclaimed Anglo-French avant-garde electronic artist released forgive too slow, her debut solo album, last week. She plays The Victoria in Dalston, London, this Wednesday (31 July) to mark its release.

Norwich music legend Maria Uzor, interviewed last year by yours truly (listen here), provides support.

Haunting debut solo LP

Julia-Sophie’s LP deals with relationships, how they can go awry, and, literally, if we ‘forgive too slow’. The LP launch follows a run of brilliantly uncompromising singles like ‘I Wish’ and ‘Dial Your Number’.

She was previously a major label artist while fronting Little Fish (with whom she played with Blondie, Courtney Love, IDLES, and Juliette Lewis).

My journey with music has been weird and long. I think people assumed that the music I made was exactly what I intended to make, when it’s always just been me trying to figure it out. Being a solo artist has allowed me to really find myself and show who I am in all my messy states.

Maria’s first release since last year’s Soft Cuts LP

Self-described mutant electronic artist Maria Uzor is promoting a new standalone single after last year’s tender/brutal debut LP Soft Cuts. ‘What U Need’ is a playful poke at social media. She said: “The tune’s kind of about how you can lose a sense of who you are if you spend too much time on there [social media].”

Her own impressive catalogue aside, Maria has collaborated with NYC funk-rockers Chk Chk Chk, Manchester-based legends A Certain Ratio, Adrian Flanagan (Acid Klaus), Baba Ali, and Mera Bhai from Flamingods.

Final thoughts

This promises to be a brilliant bill of electronica, featuring two quite different artists musically. What they share, apart from friendship, is an uncompromising approach to their art.
