Bird is the stage name of renowned award-winning, half-English, half-Irish multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Janie Price. In a career comprising many highlights, Bird kindly took time to speak with me about her most recent triumph: the film – both screenplay and soundtrack – she wrote.

Please click on the image below to listen to the chat we had and to listen to the songs from the sweeping soundtrack. Of course, we natter about loads of other interesting things too! It’s the latest in a series of interviews I have contributed to Paul Dupree’s Transmission show on City Sound Radio.
A short but sweet film
Wider Than The Sky is a semi-autobiographical short film that explores the impact of childhood parental illness and how the extraordinary power of our imagination can help a child deal with these traumatic events.
Bird’s hauntingly beautiful compositions provide the perfect companion to the film’s visual storytelling, creating a seamless synergy between music and cinema. Please take some time to watch the trailer below then seek out the film.
Inspired by Emily Dickinson
As Janie says in our chat, the US poet Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) was the inspiration during her creative process.
The Brain—is wider than the Sky—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
With ease—and you—beside—
The Brain is deeper than the sea—
For—hold them—Blue to Blue—
The one the other will absorb—
As sponges—Buckets—do—
The Brain is just the weight of God—
For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—
And they will differ—if they do—
As Syllable from Sound—
Emily Dickinson, c. 1862
