A potted history of Alison Cotton’s musical career

Alison describes her music as ‘long, haunting folk drones’ and while rooted in folk music she stands aside that tradition. She records with her husband, Mark Nicholas, as The Left Outsides. He produces her recordings as well. Alison was previously in psyche folk-rockers The Eighteenth Day of May and the John Peel-endorsed group Saloon.

While this singular musician’s main instrument is the viola, she also plays harmonium, piano, percussion, and omnichord. In the live setting she uses these instruments, and her vocals, to create evocative mood pieces that leave audiences entranced.
