This website is proud to announce that Alison Cotton will play Chelmsford’s Hot Box on Saturday, 16 July 2022. The solo viola player tours this summer to promote her third LP The Portrait You Painted of Me.

A potted history of Alison Cotton’s musical career
Alison describes her music as ‘long, haunting folk drones’ and while rooted in folk music she stands aside that tradition. She records with her husband, Mark Nicholas, as The Left Outsides. He produces her recordings as well. Alison was previously in psyche folk-rockers The Eighteenth Day of May and the John Peel-endorsed group Saloon.
While this singular musician’s main instrument is the viola, she also plays harmonium, piano, percussion, and omnichord. In the live setting she uses these instruments, and her vocals, to create evocative mood pieces that leave audiences entranced. Check out the video below to get an idea of Alison’s mesmerising live shows.
Wolf Type Dog to support
Chelmsford’s Wolf Type Dog will set the scene with oblique soundscapes and will perform an extended soundtrack to the movie Doghouse. The brainchild of Tim Rayner (Pitchshifter/Drawbacks), ably assisted by Al Baker (Bearfist), file Wolf Type Dog under organic electronics that provide sound design for life.
